When first released, The Murky World Of Seats didn't quite set the world alight, but caught the attention of John Peel (for whom the band recorded a Peel session) and New Order who they supported. Thankfully due to the efforts of Bella Union, the album is being re-released with a couple of re-recorded tracks and a new cover. Watch out for past single Not Over Yet ( a random one... co-written by Rob Davies, one of the authors of Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head) in its slower alt-country guise.

With his exhibition cigarettesandwich Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone has blacked out the windows and draped the walls of the smart central London Sadie Coles Gallery in Hessian. The space has been transformed into a disorientating theatrical showcase; four threateningly huge ink on paper images will stage an Arcadian landscape, promising to dwarf those who enter, hence inviting a child-like curiosity in the sinister and impenetrable. (show ends Monday 14.10)

NB: Private View Tuesday 10.09 from 6pm to 8pm -- includes at 7:45pm a recital by the American spoken-word poet John Giorno. Make sure you check out Richard Wright next door at Gagosian.

Realising the American dream for most is like gold at the bottom of the rainbow, thing is Rachel Feinstein actually works there, at the end of the rainbow that is. However, there's no pot of gold, just tree stumps, lakes, log cabins, in other words typical Americana, all made out of simple wood-paint, mirrors and plywood; and it's opening here in London this week. Feinstein's work -- with a click of them ruby slippers -- flies you into a world both serious and funny; yes that fine line of sublime tragi-comedy, not Beckettian, but American a la Hal Hartley or Walt Stilman. At Corvi-Mora, Feinstein will be exhibiting a unicorn, a tree relief and a portrait painted on a mirror, but that's just the image like the Wizard appears to be a mere old man... like Moby Dick is mere allegory (or is that a metaphor)... Drop in and find out.

RICHARD WRIGHT

Tuesday 10 September (Tue to Sat 10am - 6pm)

The space between design and art never really exisited until Matisse renovated composition in his rivalry with Picasso, since then art and design have been unfriendly bed-fellows. In the last few decades, that vast ocean has been narrowing, in fact in the last few years, design and art are determined more by function and institution than anything else... Richard Wright makes gigantic wall paintings. In another time, the 1970s, these spirograph-like webs or geographic maps would have been very druggie wall-paper. However, like any good draughtsman, Wright listens to his painting, that is, he allows the space, colour and line to determine the growth and shape of his work. His new exhibition at Gagosian (his first solo show in London) comprises of wall paintings, silk-screened posters and works on paper. Over the next few weeks he will continue to add to gallery's walls -- that is paint... an old fashioned activity that seems even in the 21st Century to keep on producing new results. (show ends Saturday 26.10)

NB: Private View Tuesday 10.09 from 6 to 8pm. Make sure you check out Ugo Rondinone next door at Sadie Coles HQ.

Few octagenarians these days could be expected to move into the computer age in their twilight years -- and yet Merce Cunningham, the undisputed grand old man of dance, who is in London to celebrate his fiftieth year as a choreographer, has been using computers in his dances for the last ten years. Ever since his personal and professional partner John Cage died in 1992, Cunningham has experimented with a software called LifeForms, which enables him to pursue movement ideas using figures on screen before taking them into the studio and on to the bodies of his live dancers. He uses the computer in all his dances, including the newest one, Fluid Canvas, which has its world premiere at the Barbican this week.

NB: There are also several events going on at the ICA -- and installation called Merce Cunningham and Loops (Wed 11 to Sat 14) and a discussion between Merce Cunningham, Paul Kaiser, Shelley Eshkar, Shobana Jeyasingh, Marie Claude Poulin, Marc Downie, Martin Kusch and others. The day-long discusion will be moderated by Ghislaine Boddington (see the ICA Website for details).

Once upon a time there was a man, even a hero... a man with a dream for a better future. This man became the first prime minister of independent Congo. But the powers that be wished it differently, and Lumumba was disposed in favour of Mobutu. Lumumba is the story of this man and those who successfully destroyed him. This tale of injustice, inequality and freedom (or rather lack of freedom) will draw you into the climate of a Congo in upheaval. This may be your only chance to see it on a big screen -- this film is not scheduled for release in the UK any time soon -- take it!

NB: Lumumba is part of the Black Filmmaker (BFM) International Film Festival which takes place at several venues across London till 15th of September. For complete schedule, visit their website.

The most exiting gig of the year? We don't know yet, but it sure looks that way. Brighton's 80s MBD sounds like Black Sabbath, The Jesus And Marychain and a troop of monks with amphetamine psychosis using road drills to smash open Bo Diddly's tombstone in a drunken hunt for "The Lost Chord". Tonight is noise terror at its most modern and original. Heart shuddering, eye rolling, hysteria inducing tunes played by a bunch of wide eyed, wild haired freaks. You have to break the law to have more fun. Support comes from Scottish feedback composers Lapsus Linguae and Mad Pitch. Hysterical.

Nash has a beautiful mind, not Paul Nash of the film, but Mark Nash the filmmaker. However his mind is not just beautiful for art-work but for it's breadth: he's been an educator (Harvard, NYU, UCSantaCruz), Editor (Screen), Author (African Cinema, Critical Genealogies and Frantz Fanon as Film), Curator (Force Fields with Guy Brett at the Hayward in 2000, but more importantly part of the team of uber art-event Documenta 11 this year in Germany)! Flims like Frantz Fanon: Black Skin White Mask, a so-called "docu-ficition" which he co-wrote and produced, touches at the intersection of his interests, Africa and political radicalism. So just how beautiful is his brain, and what kind of patterns does he see, well find out at the Serpentine's last Park Night, where Nash will be discussing his current projects and show exerpts from The Short Century -- his most recent curatorial project. Renowned Professors of Groovology the Sofa Surfers are an Austrian outfit that denounces that of the archetypal leather shorts. They play live (and somewhat appropriately) at Cargo this evening as part of Ross Allen's Destination Out event, but also to promote their forthcoming 3rd album Encounters, due for release at the end of September. Working with a range of independent rap and vocal artists, the Sofa Surfers proffer trip-hop with the undertones of melodies similar to those laid down by DJ Shadow, but with a less aggressive beat philosophy akin to that of DJ Food. The uncluttered production promises to fit snugly into the dark but welcoming ambience of Cargo's live hall.

Giveaway: We have two advance copies of Encounters to give away. They'll go to two randomly picked winners who can tell us which other down-tempo masters hail from Austria.

The Saturday event is Michael Raedecker's private view at The Approach Gallery, yup the one above The Approach pub. For his third solo show there, the Dutch-born, London trained one-time Turner-prize nominee, presents tropical desert island scenes and semi-abstract interiors created through his usual blend of the painted and embroidered surface. With Raedecker -- a former fashion design student -- sewing each piece with his own unique threads of quiet emotion, the end result always proves to be an enigmatic blend of image and embroided object.

Thank God the summer is over. You may be able to get a parking space and restaurant reservation in August, but September is a month full of promise and new beginnings, even if you don't live by the school calendar. This year the Royal Opera House kicks off its autumn season with a new music director, Antonio Pappano. Following the much-trumpeted end of Bernard Haitink's tenure in June, Pappano has stepped onto the rostrum, and opened the season with Richard Strauss' opera, Ariadne auf Naxos. Appropriately enough, this is an opera within an opera, and is a work about the trials of staging a production. Witty and visually striking from start to finish.

Since being dragged from Oxfordshire, to Windsor in Canada; just an irresistible hop across the river from Detroit city USA, Richie Hawtin has represented a way of seeing the other side. Tonight he'll take us to places where we aren't supposed to go and it's gonna be unreal. His techno imprint Minus is taking over The End with dark, potent and technotic electronic beats, wild snares and acid lines, courtesy of the great lab technician himself, DEX N'EFX, DJ Magda and Freefunk.

Injustice was the documentary they never wanted you to see, literally. Upon its release, threats were made to cinemas screening this film -- sometimes resulting in the cinema canceling the screening or moving it to a nearby venue -- and at least on one occasion, it resulted in 150 people barricading themselves with the projector to ensure the screening. What is it all about? Four men died in police custody under questionable circumstance -- we meet the mourning families and follow their struggle to come to terms with the death of a loved one under exceptional circumstances, as well as their virtual impossible search for justice. Injustice is part of the BFM International Film Festival.

NB: Discussion with the filmmakers and families of the deceased will follow the screening.

Fashion Statements
Archeology of Elegance
1980-2000: Twenty Years of Fashion Photography
Edited by Marion de Beaupre, Stephane Baumet &
Ulf Poschardt
Thames & Hudson

Photographers such as Nick Knight, Nobert Schoemer, Inez van Lamsweerde and Wolfgang Tillmans have redefined fashion photography as we see it today. Fashion Statements showcases the work of these great artists and many more, demonstrating that photography has become one of the driving forces of today's popular culture. The essence of their work resides in not only depicting the clothes and accessories of fashion, but more importantly, capturing and transforming a certain attitude and lifestyle into an image. This book is an "A to Z" to the work of the world's top photographers old and new... cutting-edge fashion photography from the past 20 years. Flicking through the pages one can quickly see that these images have indeed become a form of fine art in themselves.

Giveaway: We have one copy of Fashion Statements to give away. It'll go to one randomly picked winner who can tell us the name of the fashion photographer that had a show at White Cube2 last summer (2001).
