Hiroshi Sugimoto

Perhaps Hiroshi Sugimoto's iconic -- and sublime -- images of the ocean and cinema should come as no surprise when one discovers that he left Japan in the '70s to study at Los Angeles' Art Center. Arriving in an America steeped in Minimalism and Conceptual art, the Tokyo native eventually found his way to New York City and developed an art to accommodate traditional photographic techniques -- Sugimoto still uses a nineteenth-century camera -- while producing an object that engages contemporary thoughts in the guise o f traditional subjects. The winner of an Infinity Award (1999), a Hasselblad Foundation prize (2001), his recent international exhibitions include NYC's Dia (2001) and Kunsthalle Bielefeld (2002). In this country he has exhibited at White Cube (2001), and is currently showing at the Serpentine Gallery (ends 18/01/04).

Hiroshi Sugimoto (bn. 1948) lives and works in New York, USA.
